Review: Richie Hawtin Joins The Revolution

The M-nus boss finally plays for Carl Cox at Space.

Now the Ibiza season is in full swing, Tuesdays can only mean one thing – a night with Coxy. Following on from the rammed opening party last week, the club seemed even busier with a substantial queue forming early on. Although always a popular night, this was no doubt due to the booking of Richie Hawtin, making his debut at the party which is now in its tenth year.

Warming things up nicely around midnight was Nic Fanciuilli on the Terraza. UK boy through and through, he showed his roots by mixing up old school house and garage hits like Inner City ‘Good Life’ and Double 99 ‘R.I.P. Groove’ with more current techno. Moving into the Discoteca Carl Cox - stepping in for an hour due to a slightly delayed Hawtin- was building up to big drops, playing slightly commercial techno summer tracks. The dance floor was completely full spilling up the steps to the surrounding bars, and it was difficult to fight your way through the highly enthusiastic crowd made up of all ages.

When Hawtin came on around 3am he hit the dancefloor with pounding techno, though the sound had a nice groove to it and was mellow by his standards. The atmosphere in the room was electric, much less often achieved in the Disoteca than the Tezzara, and was only heightened when Cox came on to take over from him. A lover of the mic, Carl announced it had only taken ten years to get Richie to play his party. Wow was it worth the wait.
