And they're off. The holiday season has officially started and we all had a day off on 1st May – the day of the workers – to get into the holiday spirit on the island.
Visitors this month will have plenty to see and do, and without further ado, here's what's on the agenda:
Santa Eulalia has its May Fiesta in full swing with concerts, parades, dancing and fireworks in town, centred round this Sunday, the 6th.
In Ibiza town, the Medieval festival has had an extra day added this year and takes place from the 10th to the 13th and though the official programme hasn't been released yet, I confidently predict that there will be lots of music, entertainment, food and drink dating back to the time when Arabs, Jews and Christians shared the old fortress of Dalt Vila in Ibiza. On the 20th San Jose celebrates the country festival of San Isidro, dedicated to local crafts and all things agricultural, it features a charming parade of horse drawn carts filled with villagers in traditional dress.
Music fans will be interested to hear that there are a couple of 'retrofests' taking place on the island showcasing the dance music of yesteryear and both happening on the same dates - 18th to 20th. Rock n Mola takes us back to the Rockabilly 50's in La Marina, Ibiza and Modified Ibiza, in San Antonio Bay, pays homage to the 60's Mod era when soul music and scooters were de rigueur.
Eating out can be both cheap and fun in May as San Antonio has a raft of restaurants offering special spring menus and in Ibiza town there's a Medieval Tapasfest each Thursday.
