Mention the word Ibiza and images of clear blue skies, sun, sand and the clear blue Mediterranean sea instantly appear in the mind's eye. But there's another side to Ibiza, its wonderful countryside, with the added bonus that no matter where you are, you're never far away from the beaches and rugged coastline.
With around 50% of the island still covered by virgin pine forest, it would perhaps be better to drop the 'White Island' epithet and rename it the Green Island. Rolling hills, fertile plains of rich red earth, carob, almond and olive trees everywhere, the scent of rosemary, thyme, and pine after a rain shower make the countryside a feast for the senses. Winter and spring are even better, with the land coasted in fresh green grass, wheat and flowers of all hues.
Never far away from traditional whitewashed villages with good choices of bars and restaurants, there are many country hotels dotted over the landscape. By and large owner managed and individually styled there's an attention to detail and personal service that is often not found in some of the bigger hotels.
Spotlight has a special page dedicated to these hotels, the majority of which are open throughout the year, and I've picked out just a sample to give an idea of what's on offer.
Can Pere, between Santa Eulalia and Ibiza town is a restored 19th century colonial house maintaining its traditional style but with all mod cons. With only 8 rooms and 4 suites, there's a high level of friendly service, and with acres and acres of land guests can relax by the pool whilst contemplating the vines, fruit and olive trees!
Between Ibiza town and San Rafael, Can Jaume is a former manor house that has been transformed into luxury accommodation set in orange groves where peace and tranquillity reign supreme. It has only 15 rooms, all with a touch of individuality and gives clients the option of life's little luxuries like an airport limo service!
The Finca Can Toni really does prove that you can be in the country and yet be so, so close to the city. Only 3 km from Ibiza town, near the island's Country Club, it is also temptingly close to Ibiza's fashion beaches like Salinas and Cala Jondal. Small and intimate, it offers guests comfortable rooms with modern conveniences and its own restaurant, just for them.
So, why not have a country break one time, and take a look at our Country Hotels?
