Ironic as it may seem, the safety barriers which line our roads are a hidden danger, particularly to motorcyclists. Whilst they safely bring cars careering off the road to a halt, their effects on motorcyclists can be deadly because of the sharp edges of the barrier which act like a knife and have earned them the nickname 'guillotine barriers.'
Last year one poor man lost his life in Ibiza after his leg was amputated by the barrier as he crashed into it and he died through loss of blood. The Consell has announced that it will tear down and replace all such barriers in Ibiza at a cost of €3 million.
