Here's news we love to hear. In the dreamy surroundings of Destino, CEO Nick McCabe announced that Pacha Group will be implementing a green policy, shifting towards increased sustainability and respect for the environment. Way to go, Pacha!
Following the global plastic-free month, the company has made public its commitment to Ibiza, the environment and the planet in a press conference yesterday morning.
The company - which includes Pacha Ibiza, Lío Ibiza, Destino Pacha Resort and El Hotel Pacha - will develop three key initiatives.
First of all, the group will take substantive steps towards withdrawing single-use plastic straws in all its facilities and premises - effectively eliminating 300,000 units in 2019 alone. In addition, single-use plastic cutlery, laundry bags, drink stirrers and take-away plastic containers, amongst others, have been removed.
To put this into perspective, Greenpeace estimates that 900% more plastic will be produced in 2020 than it was in 1980. On top of this, in Spain 50% of plastic containers end up in landfills and are not recycled.
In the words of Nick McCabe, "We want to announce the arrival of a new era and our commitment to the environment. Our goal is to gradually remove all the plastic items of a single-use within the Pacha Group.”
The aim is to gradually phase out all single-use plastics within the Pacha Group by 2023 effectively aligning with the Plastic Free policy.
Pacha Group is now officially certified by the “Ibiza and Formentera Plastic Free” movement, promoted by the Foundation for the Conservation of Ibiza and Formentera (IPF).
Second, McCabe continued that the Pacha Group has pledged €15,000 to the Marine Forum of Ibiza and Formentera. Taking place in September, the forum looks towards the future with a commitment to the sustainability of the island. This inter-sectoral collaboration will study and analyse the actual situation of the Balearic Islands waters and the conservation of the sea.
Finally, the company presented the ecological initiative “NextBike Ibiza.” This collaboration with Sagalés kicks off this month with the Pacha Group as the official sponsor. It is donating 300 bicycles for public use in the port of Ibiza to support decarbonization via shared urban transportation.
Nick McCabe concluded, “Pacha Group today presents a firm and determined commitment to contribute our grain of sand to a green and sustainable world. As we say in Ibiza, poc a poc, step by step, ‘Pacha goes Green.'”
