Podcast: SPTL196: Maribou State

An exclusive mix ahead of the Zoo Project closing party set, the last DJ set before embarking upon their live tour.

The Mix

Where and how was the mix recorded?

"We created the mix in our studio back home. It's quite a simple mix, containing some of the music we'v been playing out lately. It's peppered with one or two field recordings as well."

Talk us through the track selection of the podcast. What are the musical influences that have you to arrive at this mix?

"As I mentioned, its basically a collection of tracks that we've picked up over the year, offering a bit of insight to what you can expect from our DJ sets."

In what setting is the mix best enjoyed?

"You could say the mix progresses from the 'home-listening' side of electronic music to the slightly more energetic and club-ready side. So it would be great to throw on before heading out for the night."

The Plug

You just laid down your first show for BBC radio 1. How did it go? Is this something you aspired to and chased or did they come looking for you?

"It was a bit of both. The idea of being part of the BBC's radio roster had never really occurred to us. After our live Maida Vale session, we did an hour take over, then recorded a pilot, and it became more and more of a reality, which we more than happy to embrace."

What do you hope to achieve through the radio residency?

"We're just really happy to share some of the music that we love. It's a lot of fun making the show so for now we're just enjoying the process."

You guys are playing The Zoo Project at the end of the month for their closing party. You've been a regular feature for them over the last few years, what is it about the party that brings you back?

"The location is pretty amazing for a start, on old zoo in middle of the island is a pretty impressive venue. We've just had a lot of great times there over the years, made a lot of friends and seen a lot of great DJ's."

Your Portraits Live tour is coming up, with the Zoo show being your last DJ set before it starts. What's the setup?

"We have a four piece band, including ourselves. We both play a couple of instruments, keys, guitar, bass etc. Plus we have a drummer and a vocalist. It's a lot of fun!"

Lastly, imagine you have some time off on Ibiza after the Zoo show before the live tour kicks off, what would you do? where would you go?

"Our drummer has been talking about a place on the island called Atlantis, so I imagine we'd probably check that out. If not we've been saying for a while that we would like to get out a boat and see some spots around the island, or head to the hacienda for a spa. Or just hit up space on the sunday and lose are marbles for a second night in a row. Many choices!!"
