Review: Axwell, Ingrosso and Friends opening at Ushuaïa, 2015

The EDM royalty didn’t need the sun to shine in the booth.

Two thirds of now defunct Swedish House Mafia came back to their summer house last night, taking over the stage that has seen them shine since 2012 and filling it with an energetic set - fireworks and flashing lights included. Of course their new friends didn’t miss the party: Robin Schulz, Mambo Brothers and Kimotion were also sharing beats during the artists’ big night.

Have your heard about the heat wave that is hitting the isle? The Kimotion guys didn’t seem affected by it, wearing long sleeved buttoned shirts and playing progressive and melodic house beats that helped the first guests to acclimatize to the party. After them was another electronic music couple - Ibicenco born and raised Mambo Brothers - who, this time, left their pure house sounds at home to bring to the stylish open-air beach club hit tunes from the mainstream. The artists knew how to warm things up, mixing renowned tracks with their particular punchy beats that set up the stage, the booth and the dancefloor for the next portion of the night.

Backstage, EDM royalty like Hardwell (who we interviewed last week) were giving support to their friends’ opening party, dancing, applauding and whistling by the time Robin Schulz took over the decks. The German producer wove into his set some of the famous remixes which propelled his success last summer: Waves by Mr. Probz and Rather Be by Clean Bandit were highly acclaimed by the massive crowd which was steadily filling up the club while the sun was going down. Of course Coldplay's winter tune A Sky Full of Stars sounded again through the Ushuaïa's speakers with a singing happy crowd, hungry for the main event.

10 o’clock was the time to bring the house down. Shouts of joy erupted in the hotel when Axwell and Ingrosso jumped to the stage; the electro euphoria had started. The boys offered a set full of their own tracks from respective solo productions like Center of The Universe by Axwell or Calling (Lose My Mind) by Ingrosso and their ex-fellow Alesso. I have to say that last night was one of the best and most elaborate stage production efforts I’ve seen so far this summer. Extravagant fireworks, flames, acrobats, dancers on the stage… The artists didn’t need the sun to keep shining in the booth. A highlight was the remix they made to Lorde’s tune Tennis Court, mixing her beautiful voice with hard electro beats.

The Batman and Robin of the EDM sphere were very thankful to all the attendees, giving an emotive speech after: "Let me tell you something… when you come here and you join us at Ushuaïa you really don’t have to worry at all, even if you are children." ... which made only slightly more sense having just come after Don't You Worry Child. An amazing night to celebrate their residency on the island for another year that's shaping up to be as massive as the previous one.
