It's only very rarely that we have the opportunity to see works of art by the acknowledged maestros of the brush, canvas and easel here in Ibiza. In the past we've seen visiting exhibitions by Picasso, Miro and Goya in different places and different times. Now, there's an exhibition just started which brings together the works of not just one, but five famous artists all at the same time!
'La materia como pretexto' (matter as a pretext) had its official vernissage last week at none other than the famous KM5 restaurant in San Jose. On show are graphic works by Picasso, Dali, Miro, Warhol and Tapies, and it is from the latter's style known as 'pintura matèrica' in which non artistic materials are incorporated into the paintings, that the exhibition's title is derived.
Tapies used clay, marble dust, string and rags in his 'paintings,' Picasso used a technique called papier colle, in which paper is pasted onto canvas, and most famously Andy Warhol used tins of soup. All the works have been assembled by another Catalan (all bar Warhol have Catalan connections) Arcangel Soul, a nom de pinceau of Josep G. Riera.
Riera's Soul persona is a rock'n'roll, biker artist, who 'fuses art with spirit, the ancient with the contemporary, creating retro-futuristic art with soul,' and whose works are also on show at KM5.
If you'd like to browse through the gallery, it's open from 20:00 to 04:00 every day until 2nd August on the road from Ibiza to San Jose. And just to whet your appetite, our featured photo is one of Soul's creations featuring none other than Salvador Dali.
