Album of the week: Joseph Capriati 'Fabric 80'

Capriati selects some of house and techno's finest cuts as Fabric's doors remain open.

Artist: Various (compiled and mixed by Joseph Capriati)
Album: Fabric 80
Label: Fabric
Release date: 16/02/15

As certain countries and cities come in and out of fashion in the dance music world, Italy often goes without mention. But that’s a little unfair; this is the nation which gave us Marco Carola and where techno juggernauts Tale of Us enjoyed their formative years. Recently, Joseph Capriati has blown up out of the Italian city of Caserta to establish himself as one of the most sought-after acts in the industry. With a residency at Marco’s Music On parties in Ibiza and his second studio album, 'Self Portrait', being released on Drumcode, his mix for Fabric 80 would seem another big step forward in his burgeoning career.

Fabric 80 is unrelenting. From the moment it landed in my inbox I was taken inside Fabric’s four walls with a mix that sits upon the thin line between house and techno. The first two records do an effective job of building an atmosphere for Capriati to grow into and the second track, released by Aura Dub, sets the tempo for the rest of the mix. But it’s when Capriati drops one of his own releases, Partenopeo, that Fabric 80 comes into its own. It’s a record which skips along with the sort of energy which would sound perfectly at home rattling around Fabric’s walls. Alex Mine’s Entady gets an airing too, employing the same heavy techno twang which worked to such great effect on Tiga’s Let’s Go Dancing.

Capriati’s growing reputation means he can also call on some big hitters, and it’s no surprise to hear Adam Beyer’s Stone Flower chime in as Capriati throws the shackles off. Recondite’s Caldera steals the show around the halfway mark, as that record has done all over Europe since its release at the end of last year. Aside from being as club-ready as anything else on Fabric 80, it’s a wonderfully melodic track that Richie Hawtin has been closing with recently, when he isn’t busy hurling DJ equipment at females.

As well as throwing in some more established tracks, Capriati does an excellent job with some that are perhaps lesser known. Joel Mull’s Wind It Up was a surprise favourite from the mix, carrying a light indie beat which comes as a nice break from the intensity of the other tracks. The mix is guided home by Maceo Plex’s rework of Learn to Fly courtesy of Odd Parents. Fabric has plenty to look forward to this weekend when Capriati comes to town.
