EP review: Maceo Plex 'Conjure Infinity'

Momentous driving bass lines cement Maceo's reputation as one of the industry's titans.

Maceo Plex has become synonymous with the Conjure EP series ever since Conjure Balearia swaggered in and dominated the summer of 2014. His latest offering, 'Conjure Infinity', which landed on the 15th of December, is a techno double-header well worthy of its release on the prestigious Drumcode label.

As you’d expect with any record receiving the nod from Adam Beyer, both of the tracks carry momentous, driving bass lines, which are perhaps more reminiscent of Maceo’s work under his Maetrik alias than anything else within the Conjure series so far.Conjure Floyd for example carries the same heavy, industrial strains as Maetrik’s The Reason which dropped in early 2012, yet the production on Conjure is a great deal more polished. The production levels in his latest releases entirely justify his reputation as one of the industry’s titans, with Maceo again being polled in the top 5 DJs in Resident Advisor’s annual listing.

It’s on Conjure Dreams, however, that this EP comes into its own, indulging in a seven minute whir of percussions, throbbing bass and a subtle three-note melody which lies on its surface. It’s highly impressive work from Maceo, as he caps a year which has seen his reputation further enhanced.
