DJs are skilled specimens. They mix, they spin, they get the party started. However some of Dance’s royalty are not just talented in the music business as we have found out this weekend! Step forward our Top Five Fancy Dress Fanatics who took Halloween costumes to a whole new level this year. Read on and decide on your favourite…
Who: Yousef
What: Bondage Big Bird
Spotted: twitter.com/yousefcircus
Playing at the Halloween edition of his highly successful Circus series, Yousef ruffled party-goers feathers as he donned a Sesame Street costume with an S&M twist. The Liverpool DJ showed his sense of humour by winging it as Big Bird complete with whip, eye mask and leather attire. Aside from slightly ruining my favourite childhood TV character, I’ll give his “fowl” play points for creativity, unconventionality and of course, comedy.
Who: Diplo
What: 'Snacks' Vending Machine
Spotted: instagram.com/diplo
Another one who has side-stepped Halloween’s fear-tastic theme is American DJ Diplo. Swapping tricks for treats, the EDM hit-maker transformed himself in to a life-sized Vending Machine, sharing the snap on his Instagram with the caption “My costume rules” - modest Diplo, very modest. Marks are specifically awarded for the big bags of Doritos and Cheetos…mmmm…
Who: Maya Jane Coles
What: Devilish double whammy
Spotted: instagram.com/maya_mjc
British-Japanese house extraordinaire Maya Jane Coles showcased not one but two wicked ensembles…but what else would you expect from the DJ/Producer/Remixer! Her first fiendish outfit of black lace, a rubber cape and lashings of eyeliner was then juxtaposed with a second costume which included a gold poncho and horned mask. Gothic not gruesome – two thumbs up.
Who: A-trak
What: George Michael
Spotted: instagram.com/atrak
Bouffant quiff, black jacket, blue jeans and big shades; no, it’s not Grease’s Danny Zuko or, as one Instagrammer asked, Jonny Bravo. It is Canadian DJ A-trak as the 80’s George Michael…You see it now? (That’s right, not the suit-wearing-short-haired George Michael that we all know now). The Montreal native left the cryptic “You gotta have faith” caption which, although confirmed his outfit identity, left the 1987 chart-topper Faith swimming around my head all day.
…Because I've got to have faith. Faith. Faith
Who: Richy Ahmed
What: Damian Lazarus
Spotted: facebook.com/richyahmedmusic
Hot Creations affiliate Richy Ahmed pulled out on the stops for a spook-tacular weekend gushing “It’s almost Halloween and I love a good fancy dress up!” However Facebook fans were left bamboozled as to who the deep-house DJ was kitted out as, with many speculating that Harry Potter was the creepy costume inspiration. Circle specs aside, Ahmed was quick to reveal that he was actually clad as Crosstown Rebels founder and underground icon Damian Lazarus which scores him even higher marks in the originality stakes.
