Podcast: SPTL180: Milou

The long serving Zoo Project resident sprinkles a little Milou magic on our podcast series ahead of the 2014 closing party on Saturday 27th September.

The Mix

Where and how was the mix recorded?

"The mix is a live set recorded in our infamous Sealpit at the beginning of August this year. The Sealpit is an incredibly diverse arena as every week it takes on a new form and personality. It’s always a big honour and pleasure for us residents to play there, especially in the last hour as it’s so magical and unique."

Talk us through the track selection of the mix.

"I feel it’s always important to create a smooth transition from the last DJ and their groove into your own set, so playing after Huxley required something energetic to say the least..."

"I would say it’s a mixture of a bouncy vibe with a dash of big bass lines thrown in, a touch of Milou, finished off with a sprinkle of love for what I do."

What are the musical influences that have allowed you to arrive at this mix?

"I wouldn’t want to put my musical influences into a pot, because it’s more the passion for music that keeps me playing. To be honest the biggest influences for me has to be the crowd, the wonderful performers in front of the DJ who define what the Zoo ethos is all about and, of course, my friends dancing around me in the booth. It’s all of their energies combined that gives me the most inspiration."

In what setting is the mix best enjoyed?

"Best not before bed I would say! ☺"

The Plug

The Zoo project has gone from strength to strength over its time on Ibiza. Why do you think it has been successful?

"The Zoo Project is a place where you can lose yourself and find yourself all over again in an instant. We have 4 different arenas, each unique and special, a pool, all out-door so you can have a nice boogie under beautiful sunshine. I often compare it with a festival feeling with fascinating performance, quirky theming ideas. It’s a completely different vibe to anything else in Ibiza."

How did your involvement with the Zoo family come around?

"Ibiza was never somewhere I had planned or thought I would end up but a few years back a DJ slot became available and I grabbed the opportunity. I’ve been a resident DJ here for 6 years now."

The 2014 closing party takes place on Saturday, take us through the line-up – who should we look out for and why?

"Maribou State and Giles Smith are both coming over to play this year. The Maribou boys sound is a perfect match for the Zoo, particularly as the mood of the party changes from sunlight to darkness. Giles has been playing with us for years now and he knows daytime partying inside-out from all the years with Secretsundaze. We’ve also got a lot of Zoo talent on show; what a year it’s been for Defex, Jonathan Tena & Federico Grazzini! "

The Zoo Project Festival has also been a great success, how was the experience for you?

"It was without doubt one of the most magical weekends I’ve had over the last few years. Running around the forest, meeting incredible souls and creating unforgettable memories - I’ve got the feeling this is just the beginning of something very special. I was there from the very beginning with a great crew of people from Germany and England - we built a Zoo Wonderland that you can’t compare with something else, I'm so proud of everyone!"

With a festival circuit absolutely rammed packed and getting busier each year, how does a festival like The Zoo Project's differentiate itself from the competition? How does it stand out?

"The Zoo Project Festival was created by friends and it’s friends and love which are the biggest influencing powers in the world. We are different because we are handmade with love. Each and every person involved puts his or her blood, sweat and smiles into the festival to make it what it is."

"It’s also the personality behind every single person who works for the Festival that makes it so special."

Away from the Zoo Project, what projects do you have? What's is coming in the future for you?

"After the closings I will lock my doors for 3 weeks in my lovely home studio in the middle of nowhere in Ibiza and work on some music with a good friend of mine. Also I launched a company for event design, décor and theming - Menagerie by Milou - which is my second biggest passion after music. My head is brimming with ideas and concepts for projects I want to complete in the next year."

Lastly, imagine you have to time off on Ibiza. Where would you go? Who would you go with?

"Beaches. Snorkelling. Yoga. Spas. Producing. More beaches. And a few glasses of white wine in between. I’d definitely love to have my best friends with me to enjoy the beauty of the island together."
