We’ve been banging on quite a bit about the Ibiza Roots Festival this year. And with good reason. This Ibiza based collective describe themselves as ‘art in movement’ and are responsible for having brought some of the World Music scene’s biggest and best loved artists to Ibiza over the last 2 years. Impressive.
Ibiza Spotlight were there, along with thousands of other delighted punters at the last gig back in August, to see Alpha Blondy and a fantastic support line-up featuring music, art, theatre and dance. It was, ladies and gents, absolutely magical. We didn’t see one face without a massive smile and not one foot without at least a twitch. Peace and love, dear reader, was the message. And everybody felt it.
The next installment of ‘World Music beneath the stars’ is this Saturday, September 20th from 8pm in the magnificent setting of the Ibiza Castle in Dalt Vila (the highest, most ancient part of Ibiza Town). You’ll find the stage set up in the World Heritage site of Baluarte de Santa Llucia, for a map of the exact location click here.
Headlining this time are Malaga band Chambao. Their music is a passionate fusion of electronic music and Flamenco, with vocalist María del Mar Rodriguez Carnero (or la Marí, as she's known, see lead image) injecting the band's infectious rhythms with what is perhaps one of the finest contemporary Flamenco voices on the planet. We challenge you to listen to their music and not feel good.
The internationally renowned band has been touring all over the World for 11 years and will present a collection of their best-loved compositions at Saturday’s gig. It’s a rare treat, dear reader and one not to missed if you can help it. The mighty Chambao will be accompanied by Formentera band, Super Cumbia (a lively Latin rhythm) and La Liga de la Alegría (‘the League of Joy’).
On the decks will by Radio Babilonia DJ Al Varo playing World Music grooves, with VJ Violeta Galera providing the visuals. Art performances spanning clowning, theatre and art come courtesy of Clownidoscopio and Diagonal. Sacred music and dance will be performed by Marta Chandra and Romana Alcarón. All this combines to produce a thriving, colourful, multi-disciplinary celebration of global visual and performing arts. It sounds very cool indeed.
