Podcast: SPTL160: Maher Daniel

Mr Maher takes time away from his USA tour with Eric Volta and running the many labels he is charged with building to put together an exclusive mix for Spotlight.

The Mix

Talk us through the track selection of the mix.

"It really is difficult to evaluate, but my mixes always tell a story. I like to start off super deep and build it up like any set. But, I also want people to be able to listen to the mix multiple times. When a set is banging straight out from the start it looses its value and you tend to listen to it a coulpe of times maybe, whereas if it's something that can take you on a journey... it can constantly stay with you."

"This mix in particular is really varied with lots of amazing artists, from Powel, Lake People, DJ Koze, Bob Moses, Frank and Tony and a few up and coming gems that are for sure going to leave a mark in the coming months."

Where and how was the mix recorded?

"This mix is a studio mix, so it was done at home."

What are the musical influences that have allowed you to arrive at this mix?

"I'm influenced by so many people from different production styles and by that I mean the quality and sound design. Koze is a production genius and a lot of these records show this style and kind of production."

The Plug

What is keeping you busy at the moment?

"A lot! I'm currently running 3 Labels, for Lee Burridge I do the A&R and manage All Day I Dream and Get Weird. For Art Departments Jonny white I've been appointed to Manage and Run No.19 music. All that along with my production and DJ'ing... so I have been on the go quite a bit!"

You have some releases coming up, right? What can you tell us about that?

"Well, I recently had my two All Day I Dream releases come out which have been a huge success with a lot of love and support. Up next I have releases coming out on Leftoom records for Matt tolfrey and Ryan Crosson's compilation and then a little closer to the summer I have a release coming out on No.19 Music."

You’re connected with some major labels outside of your own, what is it like to be supported by such heavyweights in the industry?

"It really is an honour and pleasure to be receiving this much support over the years. The work I have been doing has really allowed for this to happen and seeing it all unfold like this is really inspiring and drives me to push even more."

Where is 2014 going to take you and where can we see you?

"I'm hoping 2014 is going to keep moving up and be as consistent as 2013 was for me. Musically, I'll just keep pushing forward."

Finally, you have a weekend off. What do you do? Where do you go?

"Hahaha! A weekend off - I sit at home on the couch with my beautiful girlfriend and watch TV or I write music in the studio. Dinner with friends comes up as well but the couch is the most tempting thing."
