SPTL159: Lauren Lo Sung

A true rising star of her generation, we give you Liverpool's Lauren Lo Sung.

The Mix

Talk us through the track selection of the mix.

"The mix is a selection of some of my favourite records at the moment. It's stripped back with bits of house and dub techno and there's a track from myself & friend Jamie Haus in there too."

Where and how was the mix recorded?

" The mix was recorded at home using Traktor Vinyl and a Pioneer 800 mixer."

What are the musical influences that have allowed you to arrive at this mix?

"I've learnt so much over the past few years from DJing in clubs, watching my favourite DJs play and from friends too."

"DJing for the season in Ibiza back in 2011 really opened my mind to new sounds and made me fall in love with stripped back house music. I love a good solid groove and listen to a lot of FUSE, Dorcas and Desolat so they have probably influenced my mix!"

The Plug

What has been keeping you busy recently?

"I've been working hard on my production lately. One of my tracks is looking to be released on Him_Self_Her's new record label which they are launching later in the year. I have also been working on lots of new material, some with my good friend Jamie Haus, two of the tracks have been signed to one of my favourite labels; Dorcas. Jamie and I have been meeting up weekly to make music so there will be lots more to come from us in the near future which I'm excited about."

"I'm also pretty busy gigging lately, I've recently been playing up and down the UK which has been amazing. I love playing in new cities."

How did you get started on the road to becoming true up and coming DJ?

"I think I've just always had a good drive and determination for music from an early age. I literally eat/sleep/breath music and my passion for it has led me to push myself more and more. I used to dream of DJing to crowds of people, and watch my favourite DJs play and hope that some day I could do that too. My persistence has paid off over the past few years and I am lucky enough to have played some amazing gigs and festivals."

"Networking has been a really important factor for me too. I love meeting new people and I'm always posting my music and gigs on my Facebook/ Twitter page which has led to me meeting some really inspirational DJs and producers in the industry."

Tell us about your party - LOLiFE.

"I started LOLiFE 4 years ago in Manchester when I was a student there. At first it was just me DJing to my friends in a small basement club and since then two of my really good friends Chris Baxter and Paul O'Hanlon have started to run it with me and it's been going from strength to strength."

"We've had some amazing parties in both Manchester and Liverpool, last year I was asked to play at PARKLIFE Festival, representing LOLiFE. We were also named a clubbing partner of THE WAREHOUSE PROJECT a couple of years ago and have since been hosting some of their after-parties. We've booked the likes of; Samu.l, Jordan Peak and No Artificial Colours, but we're more about up and coming DJs than established ones. As a brand we try not to take ourselves too seriously, and really have fun with what we do. You'll usually find us in a small quirky venue with a nice sound system, for a more intimate clubbing experience."

You’re off travelling soon… where abouts and what for?

"I'm off to Dubai next week to play at a rooftop party called 'Electric Days'. They've recently had the likes of Digitaria, Him_Self_Her and Laura Jones play for them and I've heard it's a wicked party so I'm really buzzing for it!"

Realistically, where do you see yourself in a few years? Is that any different to where you would like to be in a perfect world?

"In a few years I'd like to be flying all over the world to DJ, running my own record label, taking LOLiFE around the world and continuing my journey in music. Anything is possible if you work for it, and I am willing to really push myself until I get there. Fingers crossed!"

Finally, you have a weekend off. What do you do? Where do you go?

"It's very rare I get a weekend off but if I do I love to see my family and friends. Or I will go and see a favourite DJ of mine if they are playing locally, I think it's important to go to gigs to watch other DJs, I've learnt a lot from it. I will usually start off at a few bars around Seel St in Liverpool, or if I'm in Manchester I'll go to the Northern Quarter and then head to wherever the DJ of my choice is!"
