As this was my second time reviewing Ushuaïa this week, I was somewhat nervous about writing a second piece. Those nerves quickly dissipated when I was told that I would be writing a review on Sasha’s opening night, after hearing it was one of the best parties last season under the name of 'Never Say Never'.
As I arrived, Adam Beyer was belting it out on stage. He played an infectious garden variety of deep techno and techy beats that just rolled and rolled - you could see the crowd was closer drawn to Adam with each track that he played. I know I was! He has a way of building his set and once you are hooked there is no going back. It was infectious techno the way it should be. And Ushuaia was the perfect backdrop as an outdoor venue to host this style of music.
As I did my rounds through the venue, I noticed that Sasha attracted a more mature crowd. The event reeled in true music lovers and along with a friendly crowd that made it one of my most memorable events on the island so far.
As Sasha came on, the level of excitement was building at Ushuaïa. Sasha’s set was a journey. The type of journey he is famous for; he didn’t bang it out, he took his time until that magical moment when punters were soaking up every rhythm and begging for more. His set combined elements of electronica, techno and deep house that worked effortlessly.
The performers on the stage were mesmerising. They were not dancers. They were art in every sense of the word. They were oozing with sex appeal and draped with Swarovski (other brands of crystal are available) crystals from head to toe moving like a cobra would to its snake charmer. The production was minimal and only utilized when it complemented special moments with the music. The confetti obsession that Ibiza loves right now was nowhere to be seen. And frankly, who needs it when you have good music! Ushuaïa is one of those venues that you could never get bored of. Around each corner is a new peace of art that inspires.
The level of detail that is staged in planning at Ushuaïa is world class. The finer details are what I was most impressed with. The little things like Wristbands, t-shirts worn by staff were genius. Guests wore a wristband that simply said ‘the guest’ and the motif followed in signage and staff depending on their role including ‘the runner, the press, the security, the toilet, the bar’. Everything was complimentary to the overall experience. I challenge you to go for a wander around the venue. The art is truly inspiring, weird and exciting.
Sasha’s grand opening was a stellar success that brought together real music lovers. If you loathe lollipop music and riffs that hurt your brain and would prefer to get amongst the real techno or deep house loving family, then Sasha’s weekly event at Ushuaïa is the ticket for you.
