Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye - ye olde Medieval Tapas Tournament will take place again this year in Ibiza town. Council bosses and restaurant owners have just announced that the ecogastro (that's cheap food in medieval speak) fiesta will take place throughout May, which coincidentally is when the big Medieval Fare/Fiesta takes place – this year for FOUR days from 10th to 13th!
So, what happens? The bars and restaurants involved in the tourney will have an ample offer of tapas, pinchos and booze at amazingly economic prices each Thursday from 3rd to 31st May. On Fridays there'll be a special offer on 'medieval menus' at two prices – a noble menu for €20 and a plebeian menu at a lowly €12!
There's a customer loyalty scheme going on too, though this wasn't a major priority for middle ages marketeers, due to a high client death rate from the black plague. Ibiza pincho purchasers will each get a stamp, which when enough are saved, can be exchanged for discounts, aperitifs and entry into a raffle with travel and SPA day prizes.
Finally, if anyone turns up at the Vara de Rey square in Ibiza town on 10th May dressed Medieval stylee, they will receive 10 gold doubloons, which at today's exchange rate is €10, to spend on food and drink!
The bars and restaurants involved have not yet been announced officially, but as soon as they are we'll update the information. Meanwhile, to whet your appetite, have a look at the fabulous food on offer at Mar a Vila, one of my favourites, which took part in the tourney last year.
