Just as the last embers of the famous Valencia Fallas are dying in the streets of the city, we bring you news of the famous San Antonio Fallas in Ibiza. As usual they'll take place this weekend, the one following the 19th March, San Jose day, and this year there's something very special happening.
The Valencian community based on the island have scored a major coup in getting one of the world's best 'falleros' to construct the effigy which will be burned in San Antonio next Sunday. Juanjo Garcia has constructed an enormous papier mache tableau dedicated to the world of art which will be an enormous 10 metres high when pieced together – the biggest ever in San An!!
It's already been transported from the mainland in an enormous truck on the ferry and will be unveiled on Friday 23rd at 19.00 and will remain on display until Sunday evening when it will be destroyed in a symbolically purifying conflagration of flames on the land next to the Sunset Strip, Ses Variades.
The exact timings of the programme haven't been released yet, but it's a safe bet that they'll be exactly the same as last year – see our news item from 2011 – meanwhile, have a look at how a falla is expertly made in this video.
