SPTL061: Andy Baxter

Baxter!.

Biography

Andy Baxter is known as a DJ that delivers. With an eight-year stint as Pacha Ibiza’s year-round resident and international touring artist under his belt, dance music luminaries like Danny Tenaglia personally requesting him to perform and industry heavyweights such as Defected’s Simon Dunmore drawing on his skills as an A&R scout, it’s a reputation that is very well deserved.

Baxter has the innate ability to read any dance floor, with no finer example than his home base of Pacha Ibiza, where he is the only DJ to have played every room, covering every genre of music. From Balearic sounds, hip-hop, disco and rare groove to deep, melodic tech house, Andy is most comfortable in the mix and 2010 saw an increase in demand for his main room sets in the iconic club.

He was bi-monthly resident for Defected, warm up artist for Cadenza and Swedish House Mafia plus also specially selected to open for Subliminal guests M.A.N.D.Y. On Friday nights, he was at the helm of the rooftop terrace, widely regarded as the industry meeting point on the island and on Sundays, he took the reins of Pacha Radio, hosting a three-hour live broadcast in conjunction with Cadenza on Ibiza Global Radio.

In addition, Andy also held a highly coveted Ibiza residency with the legendary We Love… Sundays at Space for a third consecutive season and was invited to be guest host of five episodes of their weekly Ibiza Sonica radio program. He played days, nights and breathtaking sunset slots at iconic Ibiza institution Café Mambo for a fourth season and was also on-island resident DJ for events specialists The Shop, spinning at glamorous, exclusive functions for VIP clients hailing from around the globe.

Earlier in 2010, Baxter’s unrelenting passion for new music scored him the enviable role of A&R scout for seminal label Strictly Rhythm. Label head honcho Simon Dunmore was quick to recognise his ear for new talent, elevating him to A&R for Defected where he quickly established himself as a major asset to the company by spotting Tensnake’s Coma Cat, which went on to become one of summer’s most groundbreaking anthems.

Heading into winter, Andy is embarking on new studio productions and has been invited to present his own weekly Pacha program on Ibiza Sonica. The Fix airs at 11pm on Fridays, featuring upfront music ranging from deep house and broken beats to disco and peak time madness. Event-wise, Andy’s own party, Pachatronica, returns on a monthly basis, bringing a unique, underground element to Pacha and introducing emerging young talent selected by Baxter himself.

It’s no surprise Baxter was nominated as Best Ibiza DJ in the Ibiza DJ Awards, and dubbed ‘One To Watch’ by DJ Mag. His diverse taste, extensive musical knowledge and constantly evolving technical skills have seen him tour the globe numerous times over, from Brazil, Singapore, Egypt and Dubai to Russia, Switzerland, France, and the UK. Looking forward to 2011, the list of destinations is set to get even longer…
