Ibiza's position as both a tiny island and a mass tourism destination doesn't half throw up some strange, even contradictory, situations. Like the biblical lean years and fat years, half our year we're packed to the gunnels and for the rest we're a rural backwater.

Take motoring for example. Thanks to the tourist trade in hire cars, there are more vehicles registered in Ibiza than the 100,000 (ish) population. Incredible as it may seem on such a small island, the amount of 'road tax' payable to keep a car on the road varies from borough to borough! So a resident of San Antonio with a Seat Ibiza will pay a different amount to the council than a resident of San Jose with the same car model.

Another odd example is the ITV, a check on the vital parts of a vehicle to make sure it is roadworthy, a bit like the MOT in Britain. In Ibiza every vehicle has to go to the same test centre - private cars every two years, taxis and hire cars every year. Unfortunately the centre is set up to cover the demands of a 'normal' area and can't cope with the mass of vehicles on holiday-island.

This has led to long delays making an appointment for the test and long waits at the centre itself. Transport bosses have had their thinking caps on for years trying to find a solution to the problem and have just come up with a cunning plan. They're going to open the test centre a couple of afternoons a week to reduce the queues!
