Like a lot of other places in the world, there's a correlation in Ibiza between the arrival of broadband Internet connection and the decline in DVD hire and CD purchase.
Over the last couple of years Ibiza's video hire shops have seen a massive downturn in DVD rentals of 30% and several have had to close because of this. The owners blame sales of pirate DVD's for only €2 at the Sant Jordi Saturday flea market and the increasing ability to download films from the Internet.
The same is happening all over Spain in the music industry where there has been a nationwide slump in the sales of music CD's. It's affected Ibiza as well up to a certain point.
The saving grace for the island is the micro economy of the macro discos - holiday makers are so eager to take home souvenirs of Pacha, Amnesia, Café del Mar and the likes that they are buying the CD's bearing the names of them by the bucketful. Furthermore the quest to own vinyl pressings of top tunes just like the famous DJ's have has meant more money over the counter for the record shops.
