There’s a surprise in store if, like me, you thought the only purpose of jet-skis was to zoom about making lots of noise 50 metres from a crowded beach. They do apparently have a useful purpose as Álvaro de Marichalar has just proved by riding his machine over 3000 nautical miles from Formentera to the Black Sea port of Odessa.
His feat is even more remarkable when it is considered that he made the entire journey alone and without the support of any other craft. De Marichalar’s trip was made to raise funds for Project Hombre and to raise awareness of the fact that Odessa was founded by a Catalan, José de Ribas, in 1794.
If our story has swayed you to take a fresh look at these aquatic speedsters, why not pop along to the Cala de Bou Jet-ski festival on 14th to 16th October in front of the Ibiza Marquee in San Antonio Bay? There’ll be a crack team of riders performing daredevil stunts and acrobatics as well as races and competitions and it’s great fun for all ages.
