History was made last week when the first gay wedding ceremony was performed in San Antonio. The happy couple had been waiting for 18 long years for the chance to make their relationship formal by having a legal wedding ceremony.
The place selected by the couple was the Punta des Molí area of the town with the sparkling blue sea on one side and the restored ancient windmill on the other. The choice of location highlights a trend on the island to get married in more and more original places other than the church.
Apparently people are able to tie the knot more or less wherever they want as long as they have a petition signed by their Archbishop, and so ceremonies have taken place on beaches, rural hotels, and the little islets dotted round the coast.
No wonder people are now flocking to Ibiza to combine their wedding and honeymoon all in one go though none of us in the office would fancy getting hitched outside Bora Bora on an August afternoon.
