The Guardia Civil Traffic Division have just released their statistics for 2004 which reveal a massive but not unexpected polarity between the summer and winter months. When our roads are packed with tourists in July and August and there are more cars on the ground than people live here it would be unreasonable not to expect and increase in traffic related incidents.
In fact the Guardia actually attend TEN times more incidents in summer than winter, and of these there are 8 times as many cases of drunk driving. The stats also reveal that August is without doubt the clear winner of the 'Worst Month for Driving' award when the island is full of tourists - mostly Italians and Spanish - not that we're implying a connection, merely stating a fact.
