Mention Ibiza and the names of its main resorts, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia, Playa de'n Bossa and the capital Ibiza spring to mind. However only a small percentage of Ibiza is made up of resorts like these, and the rest is pure countryside, farmland or forest.
The Island Council recognises the value of this beautiful part of Ibiza, after all, rural tourism is the fastest growing area of the economy, and is to invest €10 million this year in improving the image of the island's interior.
Much of the money will be spent improving country tracks and lanes so the countryside becomes more accessible and the remainder will go on things seen as typifying rural life such as rehabilitating hundreds of dry stone walls.
This programme of improvement will dovetail with a new system of cycle tracks throughout the island which have been designed to improve sporting tourism facilities and will be officially announced this week at the big FITUR travel trade fair in Madrid. We've heard on the grapevine that champion cyclist Miguel Indurain will be on hand in Madrid when the details of this are made public!
