The great thing about New Year in Ibiza is that most of the entertainment is provided free by the local councils. Marquees were specially erected to house the celebrations to see out the old year and bring in the new in Ibiza, Santa Eulalia, San Antonio, San Jose and San Agustin.
Most people have a meal with the family at home or in a restaurant or hotel, eat the 12 grapes for luck at midnight and then go out to party all night. All the marquees had dance bands playing favourites old and new, free Cava and grapes for the early birds, and traditionally the crowds make for the Vara de Rey in Ibiza where hot chocolate and churros (sweet fried pastry) are given out in the cold light of dawn.
