The effects of the heatwave which affected Ibiza in June, July, and August, are still being felt.
Whilst we reported that salt production had increased, the adverse effects of high summer temperatures have played an unfortunate role in the second largest sector of the island economy, agriculture.
The yield in almost all crops is well down on normal figures and it has been estimated that over €2.6 million has been lost. Crops worst affected were watermelons (40% down), tomatoes (50%), and cereals (60%), and in one tomato plantation not a single one of 2,500 plants bore fruit because of the heat!
