The excavators have moved into the crumbling Sa Penya district of old Ibiza town at the start of a project to clean up the area and restore it to something like the pleasant fishing village it once was.

First on the list for restoration are the areas of sa Pedrera and the square of es Sitis which are located under the giant fortified walls of Santa Llúcia.

At a cost of €300,000 financed by the World Heritage fund in Ibiza, the project will involve provision of drinking water, re-paving works, demolition of some buildings to give access to emergency vehicles and generally making the area a better place to live and visit.
