With as much excitement, build-up and anticipation as the King of Spain visiting your own home, Space took off with its usual early morning launch last Sunday for its 2003 odyssey.
As expected the streets of Bossa were chock-a-block for what was probably the whole 22 hour duration of the world famous day & night time club.
David Moreno's early afternoon set warmed up the hardcore visiting and resident party animals on the terrace with funky tunes whilst Ibiza's own lady of house Smokin' Jo followed, refuelling the masses. Not to be disregarded, newcomer Sarah Main maintained the ignition demonstrating that bigger and better things are still to come from this lass. Then on to Jonathan Ulysses who passed over the 12-inch crowd controllers to Tom Novy, who gave full steam ahead until 9.30, steering the early evening into a frenzy - (Seriously impressed if you're still with us at this time!).
Space's terraza came to a sweaty and magnificently triumphant mission complete at an unexpected time of 1 am by the legendary Lawler. Without a doubt one of my most memorable experiences on the terrace, what with the added excitement of that extra bonus hour!
Inside DJ Shade, Steve Navaro, Juan Gomez (to name a few of the crew) provided the tunes with the pumping trance music throbbing out, incessantly building from one crescendo to another. Not forgetting the frankly un-missable Foc I Fum doin' their usual spectacular thing (no honestly, you didn't imagine it, they were for real) of costumes and seriously sophisticated entertainment.
However, Ibiza's annual opening marathon session wouldn't be complete without the likes of legends John Digweed and Carl Cox's back 2 back session which started outside in the extra enclosure (between Space and Aguamar) at 6pm and continued later in the discoteca right up until close. The atmosphere 'out back' was incredible too, and special mention must go to Carl Cox for really pulling out all the stops - he ROCKED it - and not content with banging out the tunes for 4 hours outside, he then took over from John Digweed to play the last 3 hours 'til close with one of the best sets ever!
Fists were pumping, feet were stomping and sweat was flying - this is what it's all about. A fantastic start to the season, whichever planet you may have been on that day my friend?!
