The effects of the terrible earthquake which hit Algeria on Wednesday were also felt in Ibiza.
The sea level was so high that the famous fountains in San Antonio were under (sea) water, and many cars parked nearby were destroyed or damaged. Even the Mayor, who was at a political meeting in the nearby Es Paradis Disco had his car damaged as the force of the water threw cars about in the car park or caused short circuits and then fires in the electrical systems.
There were further tremors during the night and the waves measured 4 metres in the open seas. Whilst a spokesman said that there was never any danger of building collapse or structural damage, all of the island was affected in one way or another, and emergency services moved in quickly to cordon off the worst affected areas such as San Antonio.
Mopping up operations are now well under way and things should be back to normal by the end of Thursday.
