The local council, along with the Ministry of Work and Social Services, is to spend €62,000 helping Ibiza's gypsy population integrate better into society.
Estimated at 400 to 500 people, or less than half a percentage point of the island's population, this small ethnic group is one of the most problematic on Ibiza, caught in a vicious circle of crime and poverty.
It is hoped that by encouraging the children into the educational system they may have a better chance of finding legitimate employment, rather than end up in the gangs of drug addicts and petty thieves who inhabit the main gypsy area in Ibiza old town.
