Here is the shipping forecast. Spanish Ferry Company Bomar Lines wants to start a new service between the port of San Antonio and Torrevieja, about 50 kms south of Alicante on the mainland. Starting in April next year, there will be two sailings a day from each port. Using a catamaran with capacity for 450 passengers and 70 vehicles, the journey will take only 3 hours.
Meanwhile, Balearia, which runs ferries between the islands and Denia, has just taken delivery of a new 'Super Fast Ferry' which will also come into service next year. The Ramón Llull, carries 600 passengers, will be able to make the journey from Ibiza to Denia in 2 hours, and is more akin to travelling on an aircraft than a ship. Both these developments will certainly give a more competitive edge to transportation in these parts - let's hope it gives some impetus to the airline companies to provide a more economic scheduled service!
