This weekend the boys and girls from the Red Cross band took time off
from their normal drumming and bugling accompaniment to all the important parades
round Ibiza to do something entirely different. Without a single page of sheet
music, they, their parents, brothers and sisters, met at the area in Ibiza where
thousands of canes grow, known as Ses Feixes, to spring-clean the place. Whilst
not exactly armed with mops, buckets, and the odd vacuum cleaner, they did manage
to collect 30 bags of rubbish just from the area immediately at the side of the
road. Bottles, cigarette packets, and cans jettisoned by thoughtless motorists
formed the majority of the rubbish, together with other "objects" floating
in the small canals near Talamanca. We think this is a great initiative by the
band, and one which will be repeated in other parts of Ibiza town over the coming
weekends. However we also believe that there should be no need for volunteers
to clean up the mess left behind by people who don't seem to care about the environment
of this beautiful island and can't be bothered to dispose of litter properly.
Keep Ibiza clean!
