Last weekend's 'Day without Cars' went extremely well in Ibiza Town, when the normal crush of traffic was replaced by aerobics, sambas, archery, and football matches, and the belching exhaust fumes were substituted by the rattle of skateboards, skates, and bicycles. Nearly everybody proclaimed the event a success, not least the taxi drivers who turned the streets outside the no go zone into a veritable Monaco Grand Prix circuit in their hurry to carry passengers to their destinations. But you can't please all the people all the time and the owners of newsagents and patisseries complained that they lost trade because their usual clients were unable to get their cars into town to make their purchases.
